SUMMER HEAT!
Tips on how to keep your
plants healthy and blooming during the heat of
the summer.
Watering: If you have time
before heading off to work or taking the kids to
the pool, the best time to water is first thing
in the morning. The main benefit of watering in
the morning is that your plant will have
sufficient moisture to make it through the heat
of the day, drawing upon the water you gave it
in the morning to keep it refreshed. Plus, more
water is absorbed into the plant's roots, where
it's needed the most. Watering during the heat
of the day can be detrimental. Because of the
heat, the water evaporates quickly, before it
gets to the roots where...you guessed it - it's
needed the most! Watering in evening is ok, as
long as the temperature doesn't get to cool.
Standing water on plants + cooler temperatures =
fungal problems. So be sure to water at the
roots.
Deadheading: Another
way to keep your plants looking their best is to
keep the clean. This not only keeps the plant
looking its best, but deadheading keeps the
nutrients headed where they're needed most; into
the newer blooms.
Fertilizing: Another obvious but
often overlooked way to keep your plants healthy
is simple fertilizing. Especially with your
hanging baskets, annual beds and planted
containers, select a simple water-soluble
fertilizer (we recommend "Bloom Booster"). Mix
it in your watering containers and water.
